The natural beauty and diversity of Panama is what draws tourists and naturalists to a republic that covers only 29,700 square miles. Between the close proximity of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans you will find several life zones that are home to hundreds of species of plants and animals. Like Costa Rica, its neighbor to the north, Panama is a natural land bridge that links North and South America. Thus it has species from both continents as well as endemics. Panama is host to the largest number of animal species in the world and has over 10,000 vascular plants. Its tropical forests are easily accessible and even within Panama City there is great opportunity to see wildlife. Rainforest Publications took on the task of documenting the Panama wildlife in two field guides. Fold Out Pocket Wildlife Guides The bird guide contains over 250 bird species that can be seen throughout Panama. The bird guide folds out to display fourteen different sections the relative size of the cover shown to the left. This pocket bird wildlife guide encompasses all the life zones. Illustrations are accompanied by the English common name, the Spanish name and the scientific name of each individual species. The wildlife guide covers the animal kingdom (less the birds) and has over 220 illustrations that include the large and small land mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, and other insects. Like the bird guide, all critter illustrations are accompanied with a text that includes the English and Spanish name as well as the scientific name. We've prepared a couple sets of photos to let you look inside before you order. Click on either cover thumbnail to view inside either the bird guide or the wildlife guide. We think you will find these foldout pocket guides both useful and pleasant to use.
